Bandaranaike International Airport

The principal International airport of Sri Lanka, the Bandaranaike International airport is located in the Colombo District. It was built in Katunayake which is 32km north to the Colombo city and 2-3km east to Colombo – Negombo main road. Public transports like busses are available to the airport from city center and travellers can reach in 20 -30 minutes via Colombo – Katunayake express way.

Although the airport holds other such names Katunayake international airport or Colombo international airport, the name Bandaranaike international airport was in use officially after 1995. It was named as to honour the former Prime minister, SWRD Bandaranaike. Only the passengers and permit holders can access the airport terminals. There are 3 lounges namely, Lotus (first class), Araliya(Business class), Executive available to sit and relax well. The airport is operated by Airport and aviation services ltd and hub for passengers’ & cargo flights. Airport offers number of facilities for the public such as,

Number of banks such as Bank of Ceylon, Hatton National Bank, Sampath bank, Seylan Bank, People’s bank functions 24 hrs (for exchange/ATM machines),

Post office, telephone booths, fax and email facilities also available around the terminals,

Restaurants and other food courts are available with international foods,

Duty free shops including many necessary items,

Parking area,

Medical and first-aid section,

Security services,

Transit hotels & tourism guide.

Passengers can check the web address www.airport.lk to gain more clarified information. There are number of suggestions proposed to develop the airport more for an International standard. Some of the suggestions were planned to implement before 2020.
